A man who ardently believes
that "You are as BIG as YOU feel
YOU are".
To put it in his own words,
"Several times, I have seen designations
playing a role in attaching relevance to the
person. I believed that well wishers see me
as a person and not necessarily as a particular
title holder. I got the Love I expected. I am
as lovable as I feel I am." Such an exhilarating
statement comes from none other than Mr. GP
Rao, Senior Vice President, Reliance Industries
Ltd.
Mr. Rao has been bestowed upon
with esteemed awards such as 'Top Rankers HR
Excellence Award' , 'HR Excellence Award from
NIPM' , 'Amity HR Excellence Award' , 'Mid Day
Big Break HR Leadership Award' , 'Outstanding
Contribution Award from NHRDN-2006' and 'HR
Professional of the Year-2007' to name a few.
He has more than 30 years of multi-business
and multi- location experience in HRM, has contributed
to a number of publications as an author and
editor and believes that 'The ability to learn'
is his personal key to success.

The Forum is proud to present to you one of India's
most eminent HR Professionals.
Following is the crisp and clear interview
we had with Mr. GP Rao:-
 |
PSCL: What
according to you is the biggest challenge
faced by CEOs in the Talent Management space? |
| |
GPR: Managing
the aspirations of the High Fliers forms one
of the big challenges. |
|
 |
PSCL: What
has been the worst and/or best professional
experience you've ever had? |
| |
GPR: I was
asked by the Promoters to coach the CEO, and
it has definitely been one of my best professional
experiences. The worst or the most challenging
one was when I had to separate Good Performers
who were declared Surplus. |
|
 |
PSCL: One common
myth, according to you, that exists about
the HR profession? |
| |
GPR: All Managers
are HR Managers! |
|
 |
PSCL: Which
is the one award that you hold very closely
to your heart? What are the factors that have
helped you scale to such heights? |
| |
GPR: It is
a great feeling to be acknowledged and the
one very precious to me is the "Award
for outstanding contribution to the HR Profession."
It has always been my vision to see 'HR Profession
visibly leading the Business' and 'Indian
Managers becoming Global Benchmarks.' Passion
and continuous learning has been the Mantra. |
|
 |
PSCL: How would
you suggest CEOs of India Inc to help achieve
the vision? |
| |
GPR: India
Inc is a pool of extensively talented and
smart Managers. People with a global mindset
and local USP have to be developed and CEOs
must take HRD as KRA No 1. |
|
 |
PSCL: What
are the 'Innovative emerging trends' in HR
today? |
| |
GPR: As per
my observations, the emerging trends would
be in the space of 'Talent Pipe line building
by resorting to unconventional sources.' And
'Organizations letting go-off the under-performers
and accepting attrition as a reality, instead
of holding them in the context of high employee
retention." |

Mr. GP Rao has been operating as the Senior Vice
President, Reliance Industries Ltd since February
2007 and considers his Mother to be the biggest
inspiration for his career. Classical music happens
to be his perfect approach to 'unwind' and Thailand,
the perfect destination to lighten up and relax.
When we asked what he loves playing the most?
Presenter, Moderator, Speaker or a Chairperson,
we got a modest reply stating that; "I love
playing a Moderator the best, since it gives me
the opportunity to get the best out of people."
Indeed true, as states, the title of the inspiring
book that features him: One of "India's Greatest
HR Professionals"
